Cannabis, CBD, and Recovery
The use of cannabis and CBD to recover after a strenuous workout or a hard day at work is increasing in popularity. There are many reasons why people use cannabis and CBD. Can cannabis and CBD also help you recharge after a hard workout, reduce inflammation, and speed recovery?
What is known about cannabis, CBD and recovery?
Because of the federal prohibition on the use of cannabis, the scientific community lacks rigorous, experimentally controlled studies examining the effects of cannabis on many conditions, including body and muscle recovery.
There are several studies that have shown, to varying degrees, that cannabis can reduce inflammation. Findings from the National Center for Biotechnology Information suggest that CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties allow the body’s muscles to recover faster.
Further, a 2018 study published in Frontiers in Neurology concluded that CBD, because of its anti-inflammatory properties, can be effective in reducing pain and improving mobility in patients with multiple sclerosis.
However, more work needs to be done to understand what is possible – and how these products might best be used by humans to improve recovery.
What is suspected to be true?
You will see it widely suggested that products containing the “full-spectrum” of cannabinoids found in the plant are most effective. These full-spectrum products are touted, by some, as being superior to those made with THC or CBD isolate (meaning THC or CBD isolated from all other components of the plant). Those who believe in full-spectrum products suggest that the entourage effect creates a more effective result for speeding your body’s natural muscle recovery. While that’s entirely possible, we are skeptical. Why/how would the full plant just happen to have exactly the right combination of ingredients to be the most effective solution? We suspect it’s more complex than that.
You will see claims made by brands, manufacturers, and growers about how their cannabis or CBD product or method will help you recover faster. How do they know? Therefore, it is best to avoid products that outright state this will cure your condition or issue. Anecdotal evidence exists linking specific cannabis and CBD products to faster physical recovery times. Yet, it is important to weary as further testing needs to be conducted.
How do you find out for yourself if cannabis or CBD will reduce inflammation and speed muscle recovery for you?
