Some people use cannabis to help them sleep. Others, however, do not appreciate the drowsy feeling that can sometimes result from cannabis use. What causes drowsiness?
What Makes Cannabis and CBD Cause Drowsiness
Have you ever found yourself stuck on the couch watching Netflix after using cannabis or CBD? If so, it’s possible that the chemical compounds in the plant may be responsible. Cannabis is a complex plant containing hundreds of chemical compounds. These compounds can make users feel drowsy, and certain combinations can cause an even greater effect. Feeling an effect of drowsiness and the subsequent duration of the feeling mostly depends on the type and ratio of cannabinoids consumed, strain and a multitude of other factors including our unique endocannabinoid systems.

There are some theories suggesting that terpenes and cannabinoids work together to provide synergistic effects (once inside the body) and that some of these terpenes may heighten the sedative qualities of cannabis.
There is some evidence that certain terpenes, including myrcene and linalool, have sedative properties.
There are two primary cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant – THC and CBD. THC is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis and the compound responsible for making users feel “high.” CBD doesn’t give you that same feeling of being “high.” Instead, CBD is known to contain natural wellness and healing properties, causing enhanced relaxation in users, which potentially also could lead to feelings of drowsiness and promotion of sleep.
There are two primary categories, or strains, of cannabis – sativa and indica.
Sativa is known to cause an energizing effect.
Indica, on the other hand, is thought to cause more sedative effects.
What can you do to feel less drowsy?
This is a difficult question to answer given the lack of rigorous scientific research around cannabis and drowsiness. According to some users, if the cannabis you’re consuming is causing drowsiness, then you should try consuming it in smaller doses – or work to find your minimum effective dose.
Some users cite that being well-hydrated can help to eliminate drowsiness.
Others combine coffee with their cannabis to help to decrease feelings of drowsiness. But still, others suggest that caffeine can cause the intensity of the cannabis “high” to be greater.
Ultimately, the effect of drowsiness can be caused by a multitude of factors, including the type of product, dose, ingestion method, or the ratio of cannabinoids. But often CBD users may look for the product to help cause drowsiness to act as a sleep aid.
